S. Sumatra to hold repeat election on Wednesday

T

he South Sumatra General Election Commission(KPUD) is ready to hold a repeat gubernatorial election on Wednesday, in response to the SupremeCourt's verdict on July 11 on vote rigging in last June'€™s election.

'€œWe are ready to hold the repeat election, " a member of the KPUD Ong Berlian said on Tuesday as quoted by tempo.co.

The repeat election will only be held in four out of the 17 regencies/cities in the province, and in one district in South Ogan Komering Ulu regency.

There will be four pairs of candidates taking part in the repeat election, namely Eddy Santana Putra and Anisja D. Supriyanto; Iskandar Hasan and Hafisz Tohir; Herman Deru and Maphilinda Boer and incumbent Governor Alex Noerdin and Vice Governor Ishak Mekki.

They will compete for up to 2.02 million out of the total 5.82 million eligible votes as registered at the final voters list.

Previously Alex and Ishak had been declared to be the winners of the election, garnering 1.4 million votes, followed by Herman and Maphilinda with 1.25 million votes. Eddy and Anisja were in third position with 695,667 votes, while Iskandar and Hafisz got only 400,321 votes.

'€œI am optimistic that the repeat election will run well as we planned it in an honest, fair, and democratic situation,'€ South Sumatra Election Monitoring Committee chief Andhika Pranata Jaya said, adding that the repeat election would be better monitored and without any cheating. (apt)
