he Indonesian and Thai navies are conducting a joint exercise, codenamed 'Sea Garuda 17 AB-13', from Sept. 9 to Sept. 18, in the East Java province capital of Surabaya.
The exercise was opened on Tuesday by Commodore Ari Soedewo, the commander of the Sea Battle Force of the Eastern Fleet Command, at the Warship Training Center. It was also attended by the Eastern Fleet Command chief's assistants and Thai delegation members, including Capt. Banpoat Netkracang and Capt. Silsamut Pancha.
The objective of the biennial exercise is to maintain and increase cooperation between Indonesia and Thailand under the regional security enhancement framework.
'The activity is also aimed at further improving cooperation between the two countries' navies and improving their capabilities through joint sea operations,' said Col. Rachmad Jayadi, the commander of Garuda Sea Joint Exercise as quoted by Antara news agency.
Among the exercises that will be conducted are basic exercises (for strengthening the capabilities of navy personnel), pre-sail briefings, tactical games, communication checks and sea maneuvers.
