heJambi Police have decided to be soft on a member of the Suku Anak Dalam tribein Merangin regency that killed a Sumatran tiger on Sept. 9.
'Itwas an unintentional killing: The hunter [a local named Dodi] was simply defendinghimself,' Jambi Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Alamsyah said on Saturday.
Hesaid the police had asked local communities to surrender their homemade firearms,locally known as kecepek, 'some havealready surrendered their firearms to us.'
Hesaid the police was attempting to retrieve the tiger skin from the community butthey wanted Rp 15 million for the animal's hide.
It hasbeen suggested that the hunter was not aware that the tiger was an endangeredspecies. (hrl/dic)
