Your letters: Violence in Papua

T

he armed violence in Papua never seems to stop. On Aug. 31, the Army'€™s Special Forces (Kopassus) soldiers were attacked by unknown gunmen. One soldier died after being shot in the abdomen. This event is regrettable, especially given the presence of Special Forces soldiers there securing supply lines for the material needs of society, and to encourage the development of the people'€™s welfare.

Shootings directed at security forces have occurred because the authorities have become complacent and less vigilant. Armed groups are always looking to see whether people are off guard.

The shootings continue, but Papua'€™s status will not be changed from a condition of peace to a condition of military operations. The most appropriate action is to maintain stability and development.

Armed violence carried out by armed groups in Papua should be immediately crushed. Security forces must investigate the shootings and security problems that occur in the region. There should be no tolerance shown to those who trigger the violence that then increases tensions.

Officials are expected to remain vigilant and not become complacent with the situation around them. There should be no hesitation in eradicating armed groups, so security and order are maintained in Papua.
