ormer vice president Jusuf Kalla has said the presence of budget cars through the availability of the low-cost green car (LCGC) program would not threaten the development of Indonesia's national car program.
'Both programs can run in parallel. It would be good if the national car program continued to run,' Kalla said as quoted by Antara news agency on the sidelines of an Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) event in Semarang, Central Java, on Sunday.
Kalla, who is also chairman of the PMI, said many people used to complain that the cost of vehicles in Indonesia were among the highest in the world, leading to the hope that cars marketed for the domestic market would become more affordable.
Kalla said the introduction of the LCGC program meant that the aim to provide more affordable cars had been achieved. The presence of the budget cars, he warned, should not result in 'ever-worsening traffic jams'.
'Making budget cars available must not mean that Indonesia's traffic nightmare is set to get worse. Several components, such as taxation, must be well-regulated so that we don't become too permissive,' he said. (ebf)
