As many as 230 participants also joined a two-day training of trainers on Monday and Tuesday to complement the summit, which will focus on two key issues: waste water processing systems (IPAL) and how to keep toilets thoroughly clean.
'We want to make the public aware of the importance of hygiene and sanitation,' the summit's organizing committee head, Naning Adiwoso, said on Tuesday.
On Thursday, the participants will attend the World Toilet Carnival, an event to promote sanitation awareness.
The World Toilet Summit is an annual event organized by the World Toilet Organization, which was established by Singaporean tycoon Jack Sim in 2000.
Surakarta was chosen to host the summit following a meeting between Naning and former Surakarta mayor Joko Widodo ' now Jakarta governor ' in 2012.
