bout 600 people under the banner of the Coalition ofAngry Residents, staged a rally at the North Sumatra office of state-ownedpower company PLN on Thursday, demanding compensation following the rollingblackouts that have been ongoing since July.
The protesters also called on PLN officials to step down from their current posts for failing to tackle the power problem.
'We will not pay our bills if PLN does not immediately solve the problem,' said Pahala Napitupulu, rally coordinator. He said residents and businesspeople had suffered losses due to the power cuts.
Commenting on the protest, Raidir Sigalingging, customer relationship manager at PLN's North Sumatra division, said that the blackouts were due to maintenance work at several plants and that PLN would immediately bring into operation diesel generators to deal with the power deficit in the province.
'It is expected that the generators will be fully operational by the second week of December so there will be no power cuts in the future,' said Raidir.
As for compensation, Raidir said that regrettably there were no funds available for this.
