Fire destroyed dozens of houses in a densely populated neighborhood near Pluis Market in Palmerah, West Jakarta.
The authorities had yet to reveal the cause of the fire and figures of casualties in the incident that started at about 7 p.m. on Friday.
"We are still counting the number of houses gutted in the fire," said Palmerah police chief Comr. Slamet.
According to a resident, Mustopo, 40, the fire sparked in a mosque after magrib (sunset) prayer.
"It's probably caused by a short circuit," he said, adding that the mosque was currently under renovation.
Another resident, Imron, 30, believed that the fire came from a small grocery shop near the mosque.The West Jakarta Fire Department deployed 25 fire trucks to extinguish the fire that lasted until 9:20 p.m.
Earlier, a fire also burned eight classrooms at Daarul Quran Islamic boarding school in Cipondoh, Tangerang, Banten.
Tempo.co reported that the fire started at about 5 p.m.The school is under the management of the Daarul Quran Foundation founded by renowned cleric Yusuf Mansur.
Yusuf tweeted under his account @Yusuf_Mansur about the incident, saying that there was no fatalities in the incident and thanked the fire department and the police for their quick response. (koi/nai)
