Jakarta night market set for weekend

T

he first Kaki Lima Night Market, a street vendors'€™festival initiated by Governor Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo, is set to be launched thisweekend.

The event will be held on Saturdays along Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta, which is where the governor'€™s office is located.

Acting Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises Agency head Andi Baso said that up to 400 street vendors from five municipalities in Jakarta would be present at the weekly event.

According to Andi, the selected street vendors would be able to sell their wares for three months.

'€œWe will rotate the street vendors every three months. We won'€™t be charging them,'€ he said.

As a consequence, one lane of Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan will be closed every Saturday from 1 p.m. until midnight, while the market will be open to the public from 5 p.m.

Various art performances will also be held on three different stages to enliven the night market and to treat the visitors.

'€œWe expect to attract 10,000 visitors,'€ Andi said.

Jokowi said that authentic Betawi food would dominate the culinary section.

'€œThere will be food from other regions, too, however,'€  he added.

According to the governor, if the street vendors'€™ market turned out to be a success, the city administration would hold similar markets in each municipality.

'€œWe will have to wait and see and assess it after some time. We may hold similar events in every municipality,'€ he said.

Within a year of becoming governor, Jokowi has organized several public parties in the heart of the capital, such as at National Monument (Monas) Square; Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan, and the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle, which attracted tens of thousands of people.
