President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono opened an informal session between leaders of some Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies and representatives of four non-APEC nations from the Pacific Islands on the sidelines of the 2013 APEC Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali on Tuesday.

The four Pacific Island representatives were Anote Tong, the President of Kiribati; Gordon Darcy Lio, the Prime Minister of Solomon Island; Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, the Foreign Minister of Fiji; and Tom D. Kijiner, a special envoy of the Marshall Island.

Leaders of APEC member nations attending the meeting included Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and South Korean President Park Geun-hye, as well as Peruvian Foreign Minister Eda Rivas and US Secretary of State John Kerry.

'€œWe are all aware that connectivity with non-APEC nations is essential in pursuing the purposes and goals of APEC'€™s sustainable growth with equity. APEC member nations must cooperate with non-APEC nations, particularly in facing the challenge of climate change and even in dealing with natural disaster'€ Yudhoyono said in his opening.

Yudhoyono, as the host of this year'€™s APEC Summit, invited the four nations to be APEC'€™s special guests.
