(AP/Dita Alangkara, Pool)Leaders from the 21 member countries of APEC wrapped up their annual summit with a pledge to protect the security of food, energy and water from threats posed by climate change and population growth.
The leaders announced their endorsement of the Bali Declaration, which contains a commitment toward achieving greater trade liberalization, infrastructure development and people-to-people contact
in the region.
âWe have reiterated our commitment to upholding APECâs role in achieving the Bogor Goals of free and open trade and investment by 2020,â the declaration stated.
The summit, however, lost one of its stars, US President Barack Obama, who had to cancel his visit due to Washingtonâs partial government shutdown. His absence, however, did not lessen the importance of the summit with the attendance of big names including Chinese President Xi Jinping; South Korean President Park Geun-hye; Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe; Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Host Indonesia adopted stern measures to guarantee the safety of the state leaders as well as delegates in the Nusa Dua enclave. Baliâs Ngurah Rai International Airport operator, PT Angkasa Pura I, reported that 181 flights had to be canceled, while 59 were rescheduled when the leaders left the resort island. Military and police personnel remained on guard along the roads connecting with Nusa Dua, where the summit took place. â JP
