Two arrested in Kalibata murder-suicide case

C

ity Police said on Wednesday that it had arrested two people allegedly involved in the murder of Holly Angela Ayu, 37, a tenant of Kalibata City apartment complex in South Jakarta.

Chief Insp. Gen. Putut Eko Bayuseno said that the two suspects, identified as AL and S, were arrested in Depok and Karawang, both in West Java, on Monday.

'€œThe investigators found that the two suspects had close relations with the main suspect in the murder, El Riski Yudhistira,'€ he said on the sidelines of a ceremony marking the signing of a cooperation with the Depok Police at the Margo City mall in Depok.

The police had yet to reveal details from the investigation, including whether the two suspects were at the crime scene at the time of murder.

Holly, whose husband reportedly worked at the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), was found dead by her neighbor, friends and a security officer, who forced her front door open after sounds of quarreling were heard coming from her apartment on Sept. 30.

The police have so far suspected that Riski killed Holly with a 50 centimeter-long iron rod, found stained with blood in her room, and then jumped to his death from her balcony on the ninth floor as people tried to break into the apartment.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said that the names of the two suspects had come up when Holly'€™s brother and some of Riski'€™s relatives were questioned.

'€œThe information has led us to the conclusion that there might be more than one person involved in the homicide,'€ he added.

Rikwanto said, however, that the police could not yet confirm what the motive of the murder was. '€œWe are still questioning the two suspects and hopefully we can get some answers.'€

Rikwanto admitted that the police investigation was running into difficulties, as the apartment building'€™s sole closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera, located in the lobby, had yielded unclear footage.

In light of that, Chief Insp. Gen. Putut said that apartments in the city should improve their security systems by installing more and better CCTV cameras to monitor suspicious activity.

He also asked the city administration to install more cameras in public places to deter citizens from breaking the law. '€œThen police would only have to be deployed to monitor areas that weren'€™t covered by CCTV,'€ he said.

'€œIt is time for Jakarta and its surrounding areas to be monitored by CCTV just like in Singapore and other big cities in Japan and Malaysia.'€ (koi)
