Mt. Rinjani to be named a national geopark

M

ount Rinjani on Lombok Island in West Nusa Tenggara(NTB) will be inducted into the national geopark network in early November in a step toward a place on the coveted UNESCO world geopark networklist.

'€œWe will get the national geopark certificate for Rinjani in the first week of November,'€ NTB Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) chief Chairul Mahsul told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

The certificate, jointly issued by the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry and the Geology Agency, will be issued once the NTB provincial administration'€™s application form is declared complete.

Chairul said after being named a national geopark, the management of Mt. Rinjani should be improved through state budget funds.

He said the application was first submitted in 2009 by the NTB Mining and Mineral Resources Agency in cooperation with the provincial Tourism Agency but due to administrative errors the bid failed.

In early 2013, NTB Bappeda took over and resubmitted the application.

'€œWe hope Rinjani can be included in the world geopark list sometime in 2014,'€ said Chairul.

With a height of 3,726 meters above sea level, Mt. Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia after Sumatra'€™s Mount Kerinci.
