eputy Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama has been awarded the Bung Hatta Anti-Corruption Award (BHACA) 2013 for his efforts in promoting good governance and his consistency in fighting corruption throughout his political career, which included being a member of the East Belitung Legislative Council and East Belitung regent.
'He entered the political arena with frank and honest motivation; not to enrich himself,' chair of the BHACA jury, Betti Alisjahbana, said on Wednesday.
According to her, Ahok won the award not only because of his personal integrity but also because of his role in creating anticorruption programs.
'Pak Ahok adopts the principles of being clean, transparent and professional,' Betti said as quoted by kompas.com.
Betti pointed to the fact that since taking over the city's leadership with governor Joko Widodo on Nov. 15, 2012, Ahok had introduced several programs, such as revising and reducing the city's budget, publicizing the budgets of all city agencies and closely monitoring budget spending.
'He records all meetings held to discuss the city's budget and uploads them on YouTube,' she said.
The BHACA awards have been awarded every two years since 2004. Joko Widodo won the prize in 2010 when he was still the mayor of Surakarta, Central Java.
Besides Ahok, president director of state-owned electricity frim PT PLN won a similar prize in the state-owned enterprises category.
