Fire destroyed 80 houses on Tuesday in a densely populated neighborhood in Taman Sari, West Jakarta.
Subdistrict head Paris Limbong said on Wednesday that he did not know when exactly the fire had started, but he suspected that it had been caused by a short circuit in one of the houses on Tuesday night.
'We suspect that the fire started in one of the wooden houses and the flames quickly spread to neighboring homes,' he added as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
A staff member at the West Jakarta Fire Department, Jon Vendri, said no one had been injured in the fire, but the blaze had destroyed around 80 homes. His institution deployed 26 fire trucks to extinguish the fire, which burned until 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
'We found it difficult to extinguish the flames because the housing complex was very dense and the water supply was limited,' he said.
