74-year-old man, Sutiyo, died from natural causeswhile he was queuing for free meat at the Istiqlal Mosque in Central Jakarta onWednesday morning, a day after Idul Adha, the Islamic Day of Sacrifice.
Sawah Besar police chief Comr. Shinto Silitonga denied that Sutiyo's death had been caused by a stampede.
'Sutiyo was in a 200-meter-long queue of people outside the mosque gates early in the morning. He fell to the ground as he went to move into the yard when the gates were opened. Other people there lifted him up, but his face was bluish,' he added as quoted by kompas.com.
Shinto said the mosque management realized Sutiyo had stopped breathing and arranged for him to be taken to the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Central Jakarta.
'Based on the medical examination, the doctors learned that Sutiyo had suffered from hypertension for the last three days,' he said.
Sutiyo's son, Sigit, confirmed that his father had high blood pressure. 'He used to visit the local community health center for medical check-ups. My father went to the Istiqlal Mosque without my knowledge. I had previously asked him not to go there alone,' he added.
The Istiqlal management started distributing the sacrificial meat, comprising 45 cows and eight goats, after the Subuh prayer at 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
