Students to learn about retail management

T

he Jakarta Education Agency has signed an agreement withretailer PT Sumber Alfaria Trijaya Tbk (PT SAT) to include retail management inthe curriculum of vocational schools in the city.

Deputy Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama said during the signing ceremony that it was important to include the study of retail management in the vocational school curriculum so graduates would be qualified to be employed in modern stores.

'€œWe cannot ignore the existence of modern stores mushrooming in the city. We have to make sure that our graduates are ready for them,'€ he said.

Education Agency head Taufik Yudi Mulyanto said five vocational schools would pilot the program. They are SMK 13 in West Jakarta, SMK 10 in East Jakarta, SMK 19 in Central Jakarta, SMK 12 in North Jakarta and SMK 6 in South Jakarta.

Taufik said companies usually only gave a chance for vocational students to get training in their companies but PT SAT, which owns the Alfamart convenience store chain, would be different. '€œIt will facilitate the schools with practice apparatus, internships, training for teachers and other learning support in the study of retail management,'€ he said, adding that the program would last for three years.

PT SAT vice president Pudjianto said that his company needed 25,000 to 30,000 new employees annually and vocational school graduates were among the best qualified, especially for operational staff.

'€œTherefore, we welcome the initiative of the deputy governor to conduct a joint program on retail management study in the schools,'€ he said.
