lthough he has yet to pledge to improve infrastructureto better accommodate bicyclists, Governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo has announcedthat he will bike to work on Friday's.
Toto Sugito, who chairs the Bike to Work Indonesia community, said he was proud of Jokowi, who along with 20 bikers, biked to City Hall from his official residence near Taman Suropati in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Friday.
He said the governor had no plans to improve infrastructure or to add a special lane for bikers on roads, but he did pledge to bike to his office every Friday.
Toto said the biking community had proposed a special lane for bikers in the city but had yet to receive a positive response either from the city administration or the central government.
'The absence of supporting infrastructure has made the healthy and cheap transportation mode less popular,' he said, adding that Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia Stig Traavik also took part in the event.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has taken part in similar events organized by the biking community.
He said his community did not expect to get a special lane for bikers because of the absence of a special regulation on it.
