EW MEN WOULD ASSOCIATE THEMSELVES WITH HORMONAL CHANGES, BUT ANDROPAUSE, ALSO KNOWN AS MALE MENOPAUSE, AFFECTS ALMOST ONE IN FOUR MEN IN THEIR LIFETIME AND CAN DRASTICALLY AFFECT THEIR GENERAL WELL-BEING AND QUALITY OF LIFE.

AT AGE 45, criminal lawyer Ranjiv Singh is at the peak of his career. He leads a fast-paced life, shuttling between the courtroom and his offi ce, where he works late into the night.

Despite the hectic schedule, his four children are testament to the zest and vigor he still possesses after a long hard day at work.

But the father of four'€™s usual vim and vigor has diminished recently. A routine morning at the courts left him feeling completely exhausted and depressed. His career suff ered as he gradually lost focus and stamina at work.

Worse, his libido plummeted and intimacy with his wife became infrequent and unfulfi lling. Ranjiv assumed these were just the natural eff ects of ageing. What Ranjiv and many men like him do not know is that these are actually the symptoms of hormonal imbalance.

'€œLeft untreated, these imbalances can leave you feeling '€˜off your game'€™ and struggling to cope with day-to-day demands of work, family and your social life,'€ says Dr. Alvin Ng, an endocrinologist at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital in Singapore. '€œMany of us dismiss these as eff ects of ageing, which deters us from seeking treatment.'€

Hormones control the way we respond to our surroundings and help to provide the proper amount of energy and nutrition the body needs to function. Through a combination of lifestyle changes and tailored treatment programs, hormonal balances can be restored so that the body can function normally again.

The male growth hormone peaks at about 20 years of age and falls by about 14 per cent every 10 years thereafter. By age 40, the growth hormones have almost halved and by age 80, only 5 percent remains.

While this natural loss of growth hormone and testosterone leads to almost unnoticeable signs of ageing, men should be concerned about hormonal imbalances when more symptoms appear and become worse.

Treatment programs can assist in reducing the symptoms so that patients can regain their strength and zest for life.

Today, after treatment, Ranjiv feels stronger and more energetic at work. He has regained his appetite '€“ and libido '€“ and reports a much better quality of life. In short, he feels younger and more ready than ever to take on what life brings.
