Inmate escapes from Nusakambangan prison

An inmate serving a prison term at the high-security Batu penitentiary on Nusakambangan island in Cilacap regency, Central Java, for murder was reported to have escaped from the prison on Thursday afternoon at around 4:30 pm

Inmate escapes from Nusakambangan prison

n inmate serving a prison term at the high-security Batupenitentiary on Nusakambangan island in Cilacap regency, Central Java, formurder was reported to have escaped from the prison on Thursday afternoon ataround 4:30 pm.

The inmate was identified as Ahmad Yusuf alias Oji, 41.

Head of Penitentiary Division at the Law and Human Rights Ministry'€™s Central Java regional office, Hermawan Yunianto, said that Ahmad was asked to dump garbage outside of the prison on Thursday at about 2 pm.

'€œYet during the evening assembly at 5:30 pm he did not show up,'€ said Hermawan, adding that the escape was promptly reported to the Cilacap Police.

Cilacap Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Andry Triaspoetra said he had deployed police personnel to help the prison staff locate the escaping inmate.

'€œWe have narrowed the escapee'€™s moving space. We have closed all possible locations that he may use to cross into Cilacap,'€ Andry said.

He said the police had also called on fishermen operating around Nusakambangan to stay away from the prison island to avoid being used by the fugitive to help him cross to Cilacap.

'€œWe have also placed police personnel at bus terminals, travel agencies and other places that may be used as a hideout,'€ Andry said.

Ahmad Yusuf of Kramat Pulo Dalam, Kramat subdistrict in Senen district, Central Jakarta, was serving his 20-year prison-sentence for murder. He still had eight years left to serve.
