Hundreds of doctors and medical students staged a mass rally in Tangerang to support their arrested colleagues in Manado
Hundreds of doctors and medical students staged a mass rally in Tangerang to support their arrested colleagues in Manado. The rally disrupted medical services.
'We apologize because we couldn't treat patients today. We have to stand up for our three colleagues in Manado,' chairman of the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) Tangerang chapter Djasarito said on Wednesday.
In the protesters' view, the arrested doctors had been mistreated and turned into criminals for their attempt to save someone's life.
The protests were in response to a charge of malpractice against three obstetrician-gynecologists when conducting a cesarean surgery on Julia Fransisca Simanjuntak at the Prof. Kandouw District Hospital in Manado. The mother died but the baby survived.
The lower courts had freed the doctors from prison but the Supreme Court then ruled in the prosecutors' favor and sent the doctors to 10 months in prison.
At the same time, thousands of doctors had also organized rallies in Gorontalo, Medan, Bandung, Lampung, Yogyakarta, Batam and Mataram.(dic)
