Workers with PT ASL had rejected a request by labor unionists to join a rally. The ensuing clash, in which workers hurled stones at one another, damaged three cars and a number of motorcycles.
A company of Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officers from the Riau Islands Police was deployed to disperse the workers with tear gas. Other shipyards in the area, mostly with investment from Singapore, decided to send their workers home to prevent the dispute from spilling over.
Workers in Batam are demanding the provincial administration set the monthly minimum wage for workers in shipyards, hotels and other 'special skills sectors' at 2 percent higher than the regional minimum wage of Rp 2,422,092 (US$202.43).
