Participants are promoting local products to the public.
Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sharif Cicip Sutardjo said that the main purpose of Archipelago Day was to remind Indonesian people of the importance of the sea to people's livelihoods.
Sharif said Indonesia has potential maritime resources worth Rp 300 trillion (US$25 billion) per year.
'Indonesia has some advantages, including its strategic location. Around 40 percent of international trade passes through our region,' he said. As for fish production, he went on, Indonesia produced around 15.9 tons of fish in 2012.
Central Sulawesi Governor Longki Djanggola said the abundant maritime resources could provide a brighter future for people in the province. 'Maritime resources should drive the economy in Central Sulawesi and to do that the sector has to be optimally managed,' said Longki.
