Triyaningsih put her past disappointment behind her to win the women'€™s 10,000-meter race at Wunna Theikdhi Sport Stadium on Thursday as Indonesia'€™s track and field team met its modest six-gold target.

She booked the fastest time of 34:32.68 to defeat Myanmar'€™s Phyu War Thet, whose dash in the last lap in the 5,000 meters two days ago left the Indonesian dejected. War Thet followed in second place this time in 34:39.32 with Laos'€™ Lodkeo Inthakoummane at third in 37:41.96.

Unlike the day before, Triyaningsih was beaming.

'€œI thank God for all the strength He gave me, which enabled me to win the gold medal in the 10,000-meter event,'€ she said.

Triyaningsih started off the race slowly and let War Thet run ahead, but she maintained a safe distance between them.

Only in the last lap when War Thet seemed convinced that Triyaningsih would not be able to catch up did Triyaningsih pick up her pace and overtake War Thet.

'€œThe key [to winning] was confidence. Besides, I was better prepared because I studied my opponent'€™s strength,'€ she added.

According to Indonesia Athletics Federation (PB PASI) secretary Tigor Mangapul Tanjung, it was not Triyaningsih'€™s usual practice to let opponents take the lead.

'€œShe is the type who is more confident taking the lead from the beginning, but today she performed differently. She let War Thet get ahead of her in the first few laps before sprinting in the last lap to win the race,'€ he said.

'€œIt seems she has learned a lesson from the 5,000-meter event,'€ he added.

The team added another gold through Dedeh Erawati in the women'€™s 100-meter hurdles to make it six gold medals as targeted.

Dedeh, 34, who was the oldest participant in the event, proved to be the fastest among her opponents by reaching the finish line first in 13.53 seconds, ahead of Thailand'€™s Wallapa Punsoongneun in 13.71
seconds and Malaysia'€™s Raja Nursheena Raja Azhar in 13.84 seconds.

'€œNobody knew who would win or lose so I just ran with all my might to reach the finish first,'€ she said after making a victory lap.

It was Dedeh'€™s third gold medal from the event since she first took part in the regional biennial SEA Games in 2005.

In the men'€™s 10,000-meter event, Agus Prayogo finished in third position in 30:25.33. He was outpaced by Vietnam'€™s Van Lai Nguyen and Boonthung Srisung of Thailand who clocked 29:44.82 and 29:46.61 seconds, respectively.

Another bronze was brought home by Ridwan in the men'€™s 1,500-meter after clocking 3:58.37 seconds. Vietnam'€™s Van Thai Duong and Malaysia'€™s Mohd Jironi Riduan took gold and silver with 3:58.02 seconds each.

Indonesia'€™s other four gold medals were won in the women'€™s jump, women'€™s 3,000-meter steeplechase, women'€™s triple jump and men'€™s long jump.

The six-gold haul is half of what the national team brought home two years ago.
