witness at the Jakarta Corruption Court on Friday revealed new details of the involvement of former Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum in the graft-ridden Hambalang sports complex project in West Java.
Anas, who has been named a suspect in the case but has not yet been detained, stands accused by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors of having received Rp 2.21 billion (US$181,220) from state-owned construction company PT Adhi Karya, the company that won the Hambalang project. The money was allegedly used by Anas to fund his successful campaign for chairman at the Democratic Party's convention in 2010.
Testifying as a witness on Friday for another suspect in the case, Deddy Kusdinar, who was the chief of financial and internal affairs at the Youth and Sports Ministry, marketing manager of PT Adhi Karya Muhammad Arief Taufiqurrahman admitted that the company had wired Rp 2.2 billion to Anas.
'At first I did not know [about the money]. But, then I was shown bills that were written out for Anas Urbaningrum. The total was Rp 2.2 billion,' Arief told the court on Friday.
Responding to Arief's testimony, Anas' lawyer Firman Wijaya said that the law enforcers should seek confirmation from Anas. 'I think the remark was unsubstantiated as it has yet to be confirmed by Anas,' Firman said.
A Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) report in August 2013 revealed that the Hambalang project, which grew from a modest Rp 125 billion single-year project into a multi-year project worth Rp 2.5 trillion, had resulted in state losses of Rp 463.6 billion.
