nimal expert Singky Soewadji said that based on results of his investigation, the death of a lion at the Surabaya Zoo (KBS) in East Java, on Tuesday, was an accident.
'Based on the results of my investigation today at the KBS, by examining the incident site and the environmental conditions as well as the autopsy results, I conclude that the death of Michael, a lion aged two-and-a-half years, was an accident,' he said in Surabaya on Thursday as quoted by Antara news agency.
Singky said that he had sent the investigation results to the head of the World Aquaria and Zoo Association (WAZA)'s ethics and welfare commission, Jansen Manansang, and South East Asian Zoos & Aquaria Association (SEAZA) president Dr.Phan Viet Lam.
Singky said that chronologically, the lion was probably hyperactive due to the behavior of a female white tiger in a nearby cage.
'The lion was being aggressive and pulled a steel rope used to open the cage door. The rope should have been placed in a position directing toward outside the cage,' Singky said.
As the result, the lion was snared by the rope that left severe wounds on its neck and left him dead.
Singky said that the incident was a rare occurrence, stressing that it was accidental. 'I could not find any evidence that could suggest anyone purportedly killed the lion,' he said. (ebf)
