he Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry plans to use a Rp 5.8 trillion (US$360 million) loan from the Spanish government to expand its sea patrol fleet and strengthen maritime surveillance as part of a multiyear program to modernize oversight of the country’s vast territorial waters.
The ministry is seeking approval from the House of Representatives for an additional Rp 2 trillion this year for the program, which falls under the Maritime and Fisheries Integrated Surveillance System (MFISS), Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said on Tuesday.
The program is set to begin in 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
“Total project investment reached Rp 5.8 trillion, funded through a loan from the Government of Spain. Of that, we’re seeking Rp 2 trillion in 2025,” Trenggono told a meeting with House Commission IV on agriculture, environment, forestry and maritime affairs, as quoted by Antara.
The program covers the construction of 10 patrol vessels, the development of integrated maritime systems and regional monitoring centers, as well as the procurement of drones for aerial surveillance.
Four of the vessels will be built in Spain and six in Indonesia, with a loan tenor of 30 years.
Of the project’s total cost, Rp 4.37 trillion will be allocated for vessel construction and Rp 1.46 trillion for surveillance systems, including secure data infrastructure, intelligent monitoring rooms and the integration of command-and-control operations between the central and regional levels.
