onstitutional law expert Yusril Ihza Mahendra said the handling of the corruption case against former Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum must be carried out professionally and with due respect to the principles of justice.
'We hope that the law enforcement process will be fair toward Anas who has, for a long time now, been named a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK),' Yusril said on Sunday as quoted by Antara news agency.
He was speaking on the sidelines of a Regency Administrations Association (Apkasi) national work meeting in Manado, North Sulawesi.
Yusril added that, given the length of time Anas had been considered a suspect before his arrest by the KPK on Friday, he hoped that the commission had gathered enough evidence to support their case.
'I hope the legal process will be fair and professional, meaning if there is enough evidence, just go ahead and sentence him, but if there is not enough evidence, don't hesitate to set him free,' said the former law and human rights minister.
He also said that courts were places for upholding justice; they were not only intended to hand down sentences. 'So, I sincerely hope that the judicial process will be conducted objectively and with due respect to the principles of fairness,' he said.
The KPK named Anas a suspect in February last year over his alleged role in the Rp 1.17 trillion (US$121.4 million) Hambalang sports complex graft case. (ebf)
