he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) put extra security measures in place around former Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum following his arrest on Friday.
On Saturday, a warden at the KPK detention center did not allow Anas to meet with his family who came bearing food and drinks for the disgraced politician.
'We delivered the food this morning but it was rejected. They suggested we come back Monday or Thursday,' Anas' younger brother Anna Luthfie told reporters.
Anna said that members of his family and Anas' defense team had made efforts to persuade the KPK to allow the food to be delivered.
He said Anas would only consume the bottled water and bread that he had brought into the detention center
with him.
Anas had been named a suspect by the KPK in February last year concerning the graft case but it was not until Friday ' after twice failing to show up for questioning over his alleged role in the Rp 2.5 trillion (US$205 million) Hambalang sports complex case ' that he was finally arrested.
KPK investigators also accused Anas of accepting Rp 2.2 billion from the same company implicated in the Hambalang case to fund his campaign during the party's congress in 2010, the result being he was elected chairman.
Shortly before being admitted to the KPK detention center, Anas made a thinly veiled attack on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, whom he suggested had masterminded his arrest.
'I would like to thank Pak SBY. I hope this day will mean something and, thus, become a New Year's present [for him],' Anas said.
Observers urged Anas to stop the political circus and spill the beans on the role of others in the botched project.
Muhammad Qodari, political observer from the Indo Barometer, said on Saturday that the public 'were waiting to see what happens next' as Anas' remark indicated that he would likely retaliate against what he believed to be Yudhoyono's intervention.
Qodari, however, believed Anas' future revelations could be less damaging than those of Muhammad Nazaruddin, the former party treasurer, who first accused Anas of accepting the gratuity.
