T

he Langkat Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) in North Sumatra has distributed additional masks to Mount Sinabung evacuees from Tanah Karo, who are currently living in temporary shelters in Telagah village, Sei Bingei district.

'€œWe have distributed another 1,000 masks for displaced persons and residents in the evacuation location,'€ BPBD head Hardianul Zally said on Sunday as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said the masks had been distributed to evacuees and locals in Telagah village, as the intensity of volcanic ash showers in the area was still high.

'€œThe ash rain in Telagah village has been very intense, so people in the area must wear masks,'€ Hardianul said.

He said both evacuees and Langkat residents in Sei Bingei should wear the masks at all times so as not to succumb to acute respiratory tract infections, which can be caused by the volcanic ash.

Hardianul added that supplies of food and drinking water for the evacuees were adequate for the next several days. There were also enough blankets.

'€œThere is an adequate quantity of medicines, especially for mild illnesses such as flu, fever and pruritus or itching,'€ he said, adding that more tents and shelters needed to be prepared, as the number of evacuees continued to rise following yet more eruptions from Mt. Sinabung on Saturday. (ebf)
