ight areas in East and South Jakarta will likely be inundated by Friday night due to the high intensity of rainfall in upper areas, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that heavy rains had raised water levels at the Katulampa sluice gate in Bogor, West Java, on Friday afternoon.

Sutopo said the eight areas were Rawajati, Kalibata, Pengadegan, Gang Arus/Cawang, Kebon Baru, Bukit Duri, Bidara Cina and Kampung Melayu. They would likely be affected by overflowing water from the Ciliwung River, he added.

'€œThe alert status at Katulampa has been raised to level two, and we predict there is a potential of flooding along the Ciliwung riverbanks," Sutopo said as quoted by kompas.com on Friday.

The continuous rainfall in Jakarta and its surrounding areas has also raised water levels in other rivers, including the Pesanggrahan, Cipinang Hulu, Pulogadung and Krukut rivers, where the alert status remains at levels three and four.

This year's flooding in Jakarta has so far claimed four lives, and temporarily displaced 5,547 people on Monday.

Sutopo urged residents to beware of any possible new flooding. '€œIntense rainfall will reoccur until tomorrow [Saturday],'€ he added. (krb)
