massive downpoursince Friday night resulted in flooding and landslidesacross several regions in Semarang, Central Java, says the Semarang RegionalDisaster Management Board (BPBD).

Head of the BPBD evacuation division Heriyanto said the Dadapsari and Bandarharjo subdistricts in North Semarang both bore the brunt of the flooding. The water level was recorded to be as high as 60 centimeters, affecting homes and businesses in both areas.

Landslides, he said, had occurred across three subdistricts '€” Gisikdrono, Bojongsalaman and Sendangguwo. Imam Sudarmaji, a resident of Sendangguwo, said his home had been destroyed.

The Central Java Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency predicts massive rainfall to continue for several days in the province, especially affecting southern regions like Wonogiri, Klaten, Purworejo and Cilacap.

While in Jambi, the Jambi Disaster Management Board (BPBD) has warned residents of the potential for flooding in the coming days as the water level of the Batanghari River reached 13.7 meters.

'€œWe need to prepare,'€ head of BPBD Jambi chapter Dalmanto said.

Jambi Governor Hasan Basri Agus told the BPBD to lead the evacuation effort. To date, the administration has donated Rp 300 million (US$24,900) in aid as well as 146 food and clothing packages for the victims in six villages in Tebo.(dic)
