At least 22 houses in the Jatinegara subdistrict, Cakung, East Jakarta, were destroyed in an early morning fire on Saturday.
No fatalities were reported in the blaze that left 88 people homeless.
Most of the houses also functioned as shops or storage units for used construction material.
The fire broke out at around 2 a.m., apparently the result of an electrical short circuit in one of the houses.
East Jakarta Fire Department head Abdul Karim said 30 fire trucks were deployed to the location, but only managed to bring the fire under control after three-and-a-half hours.
He said the fire trucks came from his department as well as from the North Jakarta and Central Jakarta fire departments.
'There were no fatalities in the incident, however, we estimate material losses amounting to Rp 1.5 billion [US$125,743],' Abdul said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
