A man identified only as EP stabbed his 3-year-old son to death on Monday and then tried to kill his wife and brother-in-law.
His 23-year-old wife survived the attack.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said that EP repeatedly stabbed his son at their home in a housing complex in North Cikarang, Bekasi, at 3:30 a.m.
EP's wife, who woke up at the noise, left her bedroom to find out what was going on. EP stabbed her in the stomach and head and ran after his brother-in-law. He managed to escape via the roof, Rikwanto said.
According to Rikwanto, the police would assign a psychiatrist to EP while he was in detention.
'In most cases, people who kill their families tend to commit suicide,' he said.
Rikwanto added that the police suspected debt was EP's motive for attacking his immediate family.
'A man visited his house the night before [he stabbed his family]. We're still looking for him to further our investigation,' he said
