bus caught fire while heading to Padangfrom Jambi, claiming the lives of at least seven passengers and injuring 12others. The surviving passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

'€œFire personnel went directly to the scene after being informed of the incident,'€ Sijunjung Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPPD) head Hardiwan said on Friday.

According to survivors, he went on, the passengers had informed the driver about thick smoke coming from the bus engine beneath the driver'€™s seat, but the driver did not pay attention.

The engine area then burst into flames, claiming the lives of several passengers who failed to escape.

The Sijunjung Police are investigating the incident. (dic)
