14 Sinabung victims taken home by families

T

he bodies of 14 people who died as a result of pyroclastic clouds that erupted from Mount Sinabung in Karo regency, North Sumatra, were taken home by their families from Kabanjahe General Hospital (RSU) on Sunday morning.

The coordinator of the Mt. Sinabung disaster mitigation post'€™s media center in Kabanjahe, Jhonson Tarigan, said all of the death victims had been returned home for burial via ambulance vehicles belonging to the Karo regency administration.

'€œSince Sunday morning, local people packed the RSU Kabanjahe to witness the repatriation of the bodies of the Sinabung victims,'€ said Jhonson, as quoted by Antara news agency.

He said that before the bodies could be taken home, all of the victims'€™ families signed an official removal report from the RSU Kabanjahe.

'€œSeveral ambulance vehicles belonging to the Karo administration are ready at the RSU Kabanjahe to transport any further Sinabung victims whose bodies might not yet have been discovered,'€ Jhonson added.

The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) increased the status of Mt. Sinabung from '€œsiaga'€ (level 3) to '€œawas'€ (level 4) as of 10 a.m. Sunday.

Under the highest alert level, Mt. Sinabung has a higher potential of spewing volcanic materials, around 3-4 square centimeters in size, to a distance of up to four kilometers. Therefore, people who live within a radius of five kilometers from the Mt. Sinabung crater are recommended to evacuate. (ebf)
