Suspect files for pre-trial in geothermal graft

M

ohammad Bahalwan, a suspect in the 2012 geothermalpower generator graft case, filed for a pre-trial motion with the South JakartaDistrict Court on Tuesday.

Bahalwan, PT Mapna Indonesia operational director, was detained by the Jakarta Prosecutor'€™s Office on Jan. 27 shortly after being named a suspect.

He was named a suspect for his alleged role in a graft case centering on the 2012 tenders for a geothermal power generator in Belawan, North Sumatra.

One of Bahalwan'€™s lawyers, Eri Hertiawan, said his client had been treated unfairly by the Attorney General'€™s Office (AGO).

'€œThe AGO has not given any reason for his detention. They should provide solid evidence that our client was really guilty of graft and money laundering,'€ Eri said.

He said Bahalwan served as director for PT Mapna Indonesia, which facilitated a joint venture between the Iranian State-Owned Enterprise Mapna Co., and Indonesian state electricity company PT PLN.

'€œOur client didn'€™t sign any contracts and dossiers because Abbas Faroutani, the Mapna Co.'€™s authorized representative, was responsible,'€ Eri said.

AGO spokesman Setia Untung Arimuladi said Bahalwan'€™s lawyers had every right to file a pre-trial motion based on Article 79 in the Criminal Code Procedures Code, which stipulates the rights of suspects to clarification on the legality of their detention.
