he country's tourist industry could benefit fromimprovements to hospitality education, said Tourism and Creative EconomyMinister Mari Elka Pangestu on Thursday.
'Although it is only a small part of the industry, hospitality education is important to develop the country's tourism,' she said.
Director general of higher education Djoko Santoso said the biggest challenge in hospitality education was streamlining its curriculum.
He added that there also needed to be a clear distinction between tourism and hospitality for undergraduate students and those in vocational schools.
Chairman of the Hospitality Education Experts, Azril Azahari,
said improvements were also needed regarding competency standards for
graduates.
'We should raise the bar on our standards of competence in the tourist industry because if we are to compete with other countries, we will need not only academic qualifications but also competence,' Azril said.
Data from the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry for 2012 showed the number of people directly and indirectly employed in tourism totaled 9.7 million, or 8.8 percent of the national labor force.
