A fire broke out at Lhokseumawe Penitentiary late Saturday evening.

"The fire has been extinguished and we have officers there," a Lhokseumawe Police officer on guard at the prison told Tribunnews.com early Sunday morning.

The unidentified officer said the fire started inside the prison at about 11:30 p.m. The cause has not been revealed.

However, there were reports that inmates had started rioting and set the fire.

The situation was described as tense and police officers are guarding the prison.

"Our officers are still at the location and we have yet to hear of any developments," the officer said.

At least 10 fire trucks and hundreds of policemen and soldiers were deployed to the scene to help extinguish the fire. (nvn)
