esides offering preferredcells for a price, guards at Lubuk Pakam Penitentiary in North Sumatra reportedly rent a '€œromance chamber'€ for conjugal visits.

The information was disclosed on Tuesday by a mother of two, identified as Nia, 27, whose husband is serving time at the prison on a drug charge.

But Nia said she rejected her husband's invitation to use the romance chamber simply because it was too expensive. ''My husband said there's a romance chamber. He said he would have to pay up to Rp 200,000 [US$17] per session if we wanted to use it," said Nia as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Because the room rate was so high, Nia said prisoners had sex with their partners in a vast and open room concealed only by sarongs or other cloth.

"It is common to see this; even the prison guards know about it," she said. She also said her husband frequently asked her to make love in the room when she visited him once a week, but she refused as she would be embarrassed to be seen by others.

Nia said that various illegal fees were imposed on visitors to the penitentiary. Someone visiting the penitentiary for the first time, for example, would be asked to pay up to Rp 10,000 as an entrance fee.

Nia said everything meant money at the penitentiary.

Guards vie with each other to offer space to couples in the visitors'€™ room and expected small payments in return, she said.

"Here miss, here miss," she mimicked them as saying. (krb)
