eligious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali has said thatonly the government has the authority to issue halal certificates and thatbusinesses should not be burdened by certification fees.
'Certification should be carried out by the government and it should be free,' Suryadharma said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Suryadharma said that requiring businesses to pay for certification could hinder economic growth.
'Our economy could slow as most small businesses cannot afford certification,' Suryadharma.
The minister was responding to allegations that the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has charged firms hefty fees to attain halal certification.
Halal certification is required for three sectors ' food and beverage, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
