s many as 1,000 volunteers and local community figures are expected to join a two-day Search and Rescue (SAR) event to be held this weekend in Yogyakarta.
'This event is an anticipatory measure to deal with potential disasters that may hit Yogyakarta. We aim to build disaster preparedness,' Yogyakarta provincial SAR chairman Ferry Ardianto said Friday.
Ferry said the measure was necessary because, according to the local office of the Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), March until mid April marked the transitional change in season period.
'Natural disasters like strong winds are likely. This event [will prepare us] to deal with strong winds and other disasters,' Ferry said.
Ferry said that volunteers played an important role in disaster handling: This was why preparation was important to save lives.
Yogyakarta Provincial SAR spokesperson Teguh Supriyadi said the participants comprised university students, locals and employees of different government institutions.
Materials to be given during the event, he said, would include SAR management, disaster early handling mechanism and vertical rescue. (put/dic)
