tate-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina has stopped all of its subsidized kerosene supplies for residents in Palu, Central Sulawesi, as the kerosene-to-liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) conversion program taking place in eight districts across the city has been completed.
Pertamina Region VII Makassar junior sales executive, Zulfirman, said in Palu on Monday that the subsidized kerosene had now been replaced by subsidized LPG.
'Non-subsidized kerosene will be still available, however. Residents can buy it from agents,' he said, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Zulfirman further said that Pertamina was ready to meet any amount of demand for non-subsidized kerosene in Palu.
Earlier, many housewives in Palu complained about a huge jump in the price of kerosene at the market. 'The kerosene price at retailers has increased to Rp 13,000 (US$1.12) per liter from Rp 5,000,' said Susan, a housewife living on Jl. Banteng, South Palu district, last week.
Similarly, Umi, a resident from Jl. Kancil, complained that many vendors were taking advantage of the situation to increase prices as the subsidized kerosene supply that was routinely supplied to distributors had completely stopped.
Agustina from the South Tatura subdistrict confirmed that many residents had not yet received their 3-kilogram (kg) LPG canisters.
'As a result, they have to buy kerosene sold by retailers at higher prices,' she said, adding that the local administration must call on Pertamina to speed up the distribution of the 3-kg LPG canisters to remaining residents. (atw/ebf)
