he General Elections Commission (KPU) has announced that the 2014 general election will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2014. This is the same month and date on which the 2009 general election was held.
It seems that April is a good time for an election. Indonesia has held three general elections in April: the 1987 election, which took place on Thursday, April 23; the 2004 election on Monday, April 5; and the 2009 election on Friday, April 9. This year's election will be the fourth.
Two general elections have been held in June and May.
In the history of Indonesia, most elections have taken place in the first half of the year. The only elections held in the second half were the first election in 1955, which took place on Thursday, Sept. 29, 1955, and the 1971 general election, which took place on Monday, July 5, 1971.
Starting in 2004, Election Day has been declared a holiday to give voters the opportunity to cast their vote in an effort to boost turnout.
