Aceh police hunt violence perpetrators ahead of elections

T

he police in Aceh have arrested a number of people who allegedly committed violent acts in connection to the upcoming legislative election, the Aceh Police chief said Monday.

Brig. Gen. Husein Hamidi said two suspects in a drive-by motorcycle shooting of a Nasdem Party office in Matang Kuli district, North Aceh regency on Feb. 12 were apprehended on Monday. Both suspects, identified as AU and RI, also allegedly assaulted a sleeping Nasdem Party member.

He said that the police arrested AU after questioning RI. Questioning revealed that AU had pulled the trigger while RI drove the motorcycle.

'€œBoth of them are being held at the North Aceh Police headquarters for further examination,'€ Hamidi said.

Hamidi said both suspects were likely to be sympathizers of a local party in Aceh, though they refused to reveal their affiliation.

The Banda Aceh Legal Aid Foundation has said 21 cases of violence related to the election have taken place this year in Aceh, including arson, vandalism, assault and murder.

Other cases remain unsolved, including the murder of Aceh National Party (PNA) member, the lobbing of a grenade at an Aceh Party post and the kidnapping of a NasDem candidate.

'€œWe will try to solve these cases one-by-one,'€ Hamidi said, adding that the police had questioned 30 witnesses in the murder of PNA candidate, Faisal, which took place in South Aceh regency on Feb. 7. (put)
