Indonesian Masters raises funds for homes

T

he organizers of the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters golf championship are aiming to build more homes for impoverished families through cooperation with non-profit organization Habitat for Humanity Indonesia.

The funds for the social activities will be raised through ticket sales for the tournament, slated to take place on April 24-27 at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club in East Jakarta, as well as a sports memorabilia auction during the tournament.

'€œThis year, we will build homes for people in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra,'€ Habitat for Humanity Indonesia'€™s national director, James Tumbuan, told a press conference.

Last year'€™s program raised Rp 131.46 million (US$11,481), which was used to build four homes for flood victims in Teluk Bango, Karawang, East Java.

The golf tournament has raised a total of $146,000 since 2011. The funds raised have been allocated to build and renovate 29 homes for families in need in various regions of the country.

'€œGiving back to the community is always a priority for CIMB Niaga,'€ said CIMB Niaga'€™s brand, marketing and communications head, Harsya Denny Suryo.

The 2014 CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters will welcome a stellar field, including reigning Asian Tour Order of Merit champion Kiradech Aphibarnrat, fellow Thai star Thongchai Jaidee, major winner Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa and defending champion Bernd Wiesberger of Austria.

The $750,000 tournament will see 150 golfers '€” who including 20 local pros and four amateurs '€” from 30 countries.

The tournament will be broadcast worldwide through the Asian Tour'€™s global television platforms as well as local TV station Metro TV. Golf clinics for young golfers have also been held as part of the tournament'€™s mission to help develop golf in the country.

The clinics at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club were attended by 20 junior golfers selected by the Indonesian Golf Association (PGI) and the CIMB Niaga Foundation through its CIMB Group'€™s Junior Development Program for Golf.
