he Meteorological, Climatologyand Geophysics Agency's (BMKG) Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning Center hasissued a warning that tsunami waves might hit Indonesia between 5:11 a.m. and7:44 p.m. Jakarta time on Thursday following a recent earthquake in Chile.
The data showed tsunami waves of up to a half meter had the potential to strike 115 locations in 19 provinces across the country such as Papua, West Papua, Maluku, North Maluku, East Java, Central Java, Banten, East Kalimantan, Bali and West Nusa Tenggara.
"We want people to stay away from beaches and river banks. The waves may come at different times and the first wave may not be the highest one," National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
He said that coastal areas in Papua like Jayapura, Sarmi, Waropen, Biak Numfor and Supiori might be hit by tsunami waves between 5:11 am and 5:51 am on Thursday. (nfo)
