Jakarta govt mulls motorcycle-free zones

J

akartaDeputy Governor Basuki '€œAhok'€ Tjahaja Purnama says the administration plans toapply motorcycle-free zones on a number of streets in the capital, with theadministration providing free double-decker buses.

Ahok said the motorcycle-free zones would be located on Jl. Rasuna Said (Menteng square-Matraman intersection), Jl. Gatot Subroto (Balai Kartini-Slipi), Jl. Jenderal Sudirman (Hotel Indonesia traffic circle-Blok M) and the National Monument (Monas)-Old Town through to Jl.Gajah Mada and Jl. Hayam Wuruk.

'€œI'€™m also thinking about another route that would link Monas to Ancol through Banteng square, Pasar Baru and Gunung Sahari,'€ Ahok said quoted by kompas.com on Friday.

Ahok said the administration would also provide a number of parking lots within motorcycle-free zones. He said these parking lots were meant as a way to encourage people to take the free buses instead of taking their own vehicles.

'€œWe will continually increase parking ticket prices. We want to encourage people to start taking public transportation,'€ he said.

He said the administration also planned to increase the number of Transjakarta busses so they could pick up passengers every one and half minutes. (put/dic)
