he Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is optimistic it willeventually secure at least 20 percent of the vote in the legislative election, from its current level of 19.24 percent, by the end of vote-countingprocess.
The leader of the PDI-P's election campaign team, Puan Maharani, expressed her confidenceto journalists after a closed-door meeting with PDI-P regional branch leaders atPDI-P chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri's residence on Tuesday.
"God willing, we will later be able to name our own presidential and vicepresidential candidates," Puan said.
She guaranteed that the naming would not jeopardize the PDI-P's ongoingdiscussions with other political parties on the establishment of a coalition inthe upcoming presidential election.
"It doesn't matter whether the vice presidential candidate is from within the party or not, we will still work together with the others," Puan said.
The party believed that being able to secure 20 percent of the vote would make the PDI-P dominant and influential in a future coalition.
PDI-P secretary-general Tjahjo Kumolo said the
party would prefer a small coalition for effective government in the future, if
Jokowi was elected president.
"We don't want to have a large coalition, such as the current one, as it
will hinder the government's work," Tjahjo said.
"We're still thoroughly discussing this when talking about collaboration with other parties," Tjahjo emphasized.
According to a quick count organized by Kompas, the PDI-P has secured 19.24 percent while its new ally, the NasDem Party, has secured 6.71 percent.
