Parents sue JIS for $12 million over sexual assault case

T

he parents of the 6-year-old Jakarta International School (JIS) student that was allegedly sexually assaulted are suing the school'€™s foundation for US$ 12 million, saying that negligence resulted in their son getting sexually assaulted by several cleaners in a restroom.

The parents'€™ lawyer, OC Kaligis, filed the lawsuit at the South Jakarta district court on Monday, tribunnews.com reported. In the lawsuit, the foundation, which was officially established on June 9, 1977, is accused of negligence resulting in physical and psychological suffering and trauma.

The lawsuit claims that immaterial losses have amounted to $10 million, although the sufferings experienced by the victim could not be counted.

It is said that the victim'€™s material losses have amounted to more than $2 million, covering medication and treatment costs as well as psychological recovery costs.

The victim'€™s parents also asked the South Jakarta district court head to punish the Education and Culture Ministry, which is also targeted in the lawsuit, to close JIS permanently.

Separately, JIS claimed that it was not aware a lawsuit had been filed.

'€œThe fact has just been brought to our attention and we will consult our legal team about that,'€ school headmaster Tim Carr said in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday. (idb/ebf)
